UVA Declines to Update Cavalier Daily on Status of DEI Office

More than 40 days after the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors voted to dissolve its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the University has remained silent on how it has complied with the mandate. Despite repeated requests from The Cavalier Daily, University spokesperson Brian Coy said UVA “did not have information to share at this time.” The DEI office’s website has been quietly removed and now redirects to the University’s main page.

The Board’s resolution required President Jim Ryan to report back within 30 days on how permissible programs would be transferred—but UVA has yet to confirm whether this timeline meant calendar or business days, both of which have now passed.

The decision aligns with a January 21 executive order from former President Trump that prohibits federally funded universities from operating DEI programs.

The lack of transparency raises uncomfortable questions. Why hasn’t UVA updated its students, faculty, or staff? And why aren’t more students demanding answers? For a student body often praised for its activism, there’s a curious absence of public skepticism toward the University’s silence.

As The Cavalier Daily continues pushing for answers, one thing is clear: “The University has not issued any other public statements sharing what actions have been taken.”
